If you've never used your IEHP benefits for therapy before, the process might feel a little confusing — especially since IEHP works differently than many other insurance plans. This guide breaks it all down in plain language, so you know exactly what to expect before you book your first session.
The Good News First: No Referral, No Pre-Authorization Needed
IEHP is an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), and if you've had an HMO before, you might be bracing yourself for a slow process, like calling your primary care doctor, waiting on a referral, and getting pre-approval before you can see a specialist.
You can skip all of that.
According to IEHP's member guidance, therapy and counseling, including individual, family, and group sessions, do not require a referral or prior authorization to get started. That means as long as your IEHP plan is active, you can simply call Inland Empire Couples Counseling, schedule your first appointment, and begin couples counseling.
We love this because it means no red tape, no waiting on approval letters, no runaround with your primary care provider. We can work with you to begin counseling sooner, and on your terms.
Not All IEHP Plans Are the Same
IEHP isn't a single, one-size-fits-all plan. It's an umbrella that covers three different types of coverage, and which one you have affects a few of the details of your care with us. Here's a quick breakdown:
1. IEHP Covered (Covered California)
This is IEHP's marketplace plan, offered through Covered California for residents who don't qualify for Medi-Cal. Like most marketplace health plans, IEHP Covered plans typically come with standard insurance features such as co-pays and deductibles, which vary depending on the specific plan tier you selected (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum).
2. IEHP Medi-Cal
This is a no-cost health coverage plan for qualifying low-income individuals, families, and residents of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. IEHP Medi-Cal generally comes with no monthly premiums and little to no out-of-pocket cost for covered visits, including behavioral health services.
3. IEHP DualChoice
This plan is for members who qualify for both Medicare and Medi-Cal, combining both sets of benefits into one coordinated plan. Like Medi-Cal, DualChoice is a no-to-low-cost plan for eligible members.

Here's how our policy works, and why it looks a little different depending on your plan:
If you have IEHP Covered California
Because this plan works like a traditional insurance plan with co-pays and deductibles, our standard no-show/late cancellation policy applies: if you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice or miss your appointment entirely, a $75 missed appointment fee applies.
We know some practices require 48 or even 72 hours' notice, which can be frustrating when something pops up last minute to prevent you from making it to your appointment. At Inland Empire Couples Counseling, we think 24 hours is fairer and more reasonable. We understand life happens, and we'll always work with you when we can. This fee exists simply because insurance doesn't reimburse us for sessions that don't happen, but we still have a therapist's time, and their pay, reserved just for you.
If you have IEHP Medi-Cal or IEHP DualChoice
We have some good news here. There's no missed appointment fee for these plans. However, because these plans typically involve no or very low co-pays, we ask that you treat your reserved time with the same care and respect as any paid appointment.
If a second late cancellation or no-show happens, we will need to complete services with our practice and provide you with a referral to another provider who may have more flexibility to accommodate inconsistent attendance.
But we also want to be clear that neither the fee nor the referral is intended as punishment. It's simply that when a time slot is reserved for you and isn't used, we aren't able to offer that time to another couple who may be waiting for support, and we can't continue holding space that isn't being used. Our goal is always to work with you, communicate early if something comes up, and help you get the consistent care you and your relationship deserve, whether that's with us or with a provider who's a better fit for your schedule.

When appointments are missed without notice, that time can't be recovered or offered to someone else who needs it.
